Information and communication technology and business process outsourcing (ICT & BPO) is one of the key sectors under the service industry in Sri Lanka
which the sector is the fourth largest foreign exchange earner for the Sri Lankan economy.With a growth of 7.55%, the sector exports have reached up to 968 million US dollars in 2017 over to the previous year of 2016.
Nearly 300 companies are involved in exporting ICT services whereas the number of companies that offer their services to locally-based companies is much more.
The expectations of the government also very high which the government expects nearly 5 billion US dollars as exports income from
the ICT industry by 2022 (Export Development Board Sri Lanka, 2020 A) this indicates the importance of the industry and the growth
potential of the industry in the future.
By 2017 the literacy rate in the country has been evaluated as 98% whereas the ICT literacy rate in urban areas has been estimated at 39.2%, in rural
areas at 25.5%, and in estates, 9% with Sri Lanka is contrary that has a very high ICT literacy rate in South Asia (Department of Census and
Statistics - Sri Lanka, 2020). ICT education has been introduced to the Sri Lankan school academic curriculum in 2006 whereas at present nearly
4500 schools which are counting 45% of the total schools in Sri Lanka and 22,500 teachers which is slightly higher than 10% of the total beating
population has been empowered with ICT education (Export Development Board Sri Lanka, 2020 B). By 2006 the government universities have produced
2173 IT and software engineering graduates and 528 postgraduates whereas by 2015 the number of graduates who have been registered and studying in
IT and software engineering at eight government universities accounted for 10,806 to indicate the expansion of ICT education in Sri Lanka.
